Pulling the old “pretending to take a pic of my friend but really taking a pic of the celeb behind them” move is one thing. What happened to Sophia Bush is another, and completely unacceptable.
The One Tree Hill star recounted a scary encounter with a “fan” on Podcrushed, the podcast hosted by You star Penn Badgley and his cohosts Nava Kavelin and Sophie Ansari. They focus on formative adolescent experiences, and Bush’s went way beyond an awkward puberty anecdote.
While enjoying time with friends at a bar, Bush recounted on the April 5 episode, she noticed a man filming her on his phone. “I’m not a zoo animal,” she recalled, per EW. “I finally go over and I say, ‘Hi, I’m a person. I’d like to shake your hand. My name is Sophia. You’re making me really uncomfortable, man. I’ve asked you to stop. I’m a girl in a bar. You are a man I do not know. I don’t wanna be videoed on your phone. And my friends don’t either. Can you please stop?’”

According to Bush, the man replied, “‘I don’t have to stop. You’re in public,’” and I’d just like to take a sec here to pause and say that if anyone ever says this to you, don’t take it at face value! TikTok has convinced us that anyone can expect to be recorded anywhere, but if you’re not a public official (like a cop in uniform, for instance), you have rights! It varies state to state, and yes, technically a bar is a ‘public place,’ but if the owner were to set a no-filming-celebs rule, for instance, you’re supposed to actually follow that. It’s why you can’t take pictures at SoHo House. Anyway, back to Sophia Bush.
“And I said, ‘Okay, but is there no world in which you can understand that you are making me feel like a piece of meat, like I’m not human?’ And he goes, ‘I watch your show, so I pay your fucking salary. You are a piece of meat to me.’ And I just went, ‘What?’” she recalled, adding that later the man told her, “You’re just a TV prostitute.”
