The best scary movies span decades and themes, but they all have one thing in common: the ability to tap into your deepest fears. Good horror movies are so unsettling to watch because they play out the very things you’d most like to avoid in real life. Vampires? Wouldn’t want to meet one! A haunted house? No thanks. A twisted serial killer who just won’t quit? Yeah, that’s a hard pass from me.
And yet! I love a spooky tale, especially horror movies with women leads. In fact I watch Halloween movies all year round. There’s something cathartic about facing these terrors from the safety of your couch. Paranormal movies are actually fun when you know your own house isn’t haunted, you know?
I’ve shared a few of my favorites, below, and asked my fellow Glamour staffers about the scariest horror films they’ve ever watched as well. The results were entertaining, to say the least. They also gave me some new creepy movies to add to my queue—turns out, some of the best scary movies are on Netflix and other streaming services.
Ready to see the scariest movie ever? Turn the lights off, grab your popcorn, and get ready to be spooked.
