Ra, ra, ah-ah-ahhh. Lady Gaga is certainly caught in a bad romance amidst her journey to win an Oscar for acting. On Valentine’s Day, the pop star, jazz singer, and actor shared a photo from her most recent acting gig in Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to director Todd Phillips’s 2019 film Joker, which won several Oscars, including best actor for Joaquin Phoenix (the titular Joker) and best original score. See the photo over on Gaga’s Instagram.
In Joker: Folie à Deux, which has been kept mostly under wraps besides its casting and the fact that it will be a musical, Lady Gaga is playing Harley Quinn, who was more recently portrayed by Margot Robbie in the Suicide Squad films and Birds of Prey.
The creepy photo feels like a still from a music video from The Fame Monster era. Joker’s face is up close to Harley’s, and her hand is around his neck while they stare into each other’s eyes. Are they about to kiss before she dives into a pool of acid? Probably. It looks like her nose is bloody and her lips are very red, so maybe they already kissed, and Joker’s clown makeup is all over her mouth. Personally, I am going to have a hard time watching this film without putting my paws up and screaming “Gaga” every time the woman is on screen.
Unfortunately for Little Monsters, you won’t be able to see Mother Monster in Joker: Folie à Deux until its release date of October 4, 2024. Why have we been teased like this?
Along with Gaga and Phoenix, the film will star Zazie Beetz (reprising her role as Sophie, neighbor to Arthur Dent, Joker’s alter ego), Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Harry Lawtey.
